Hockey sticks distributed

Bhubaneswar: In a bid to promote hockey among the school students of the city, Olympian and Hockey Gangpur Orissa vice-president William Xalxo distributed hockey sticks and balls among the students of Tapoban High School in Khandagiri, Thursday.

Former India hockey player Roshan Minz, who was also present at the event, announced that they will create a boy’s junior hockey team in the Tapoban High School. He also added that proper training with qualified coaches and necessary hockey equipments will be provided to these youngsters.

Hockey Gangapur Orissa general secretary Debasish Gouda said, “Our initial steps will be to adopt eight city based schools to create the junior level hockey players. We have already developed two hockey teams in the Capital High School and Unit-I Boys High School at Bhubaneswar.”

Semifinalists spotted in TT tourney

Cuttack A, Cuttack B, AG Orissa and Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) entered the semifinals of the men’s team events of the 23rd Inter-District and State Level Tennis Championships after finishing on top of their respective groups at Angul, Thursday.

In the junior girls’ segment Ananya Basak, Payal Pani, Suryasamita Aparajita, Sushree Patnaik, Yoshita Jammula, Gayatri Mittra, Nandini Biswal, Sikriti Bhagat won their respective matches to advance into the quarterfinals.

Double victories

Pramod Bhagat of Orissa won both his singles and doubles match on the second day of the Para Badminton World Championships at Ulsan, South Korea, Thursday.

In the singles Pramod defeated Kim Chayang Man of South Korea in direct sets 21-7, 21-14. In the doubles he partnered Tarun to get the better of South Korea duo Jo Dung Jai and Kim Chayang Man 21-18, 21-10.
