Housing mess: Tribal takes shelter in toilet

Raisuan: Amid allegations of irregularities in housing schemes, a poor tribal daily wager’s family has turned a toilet given to him as their shelter at Ghagisahi in Gopinathpur panchayat under Sadar block.

Several other poor people in the village have been deprived of housing schemes too. They have been living in dilapidated houses, but the administration has not taken note of their plight.

The worker, Shyam Bentakar, said that since their thatched house caved in, he has been tired of running from panchayat office to block office, pleading for a housing unit, but to no avail.  Locals alleged that those who pay bribe can only get housing units.

As Shyam Bentakar’s shanty is in a ramshackle condition, his family has taken shelter in the toilet. While the government provides houses to poor and disadvantaged sections under Indira Awas or Mo Kudia, irregularities allegedly scuttled the proper implementation of the housing schemes in Keonjhar. The housing benefits do not reach scores of poor people while many rich people have allegedly grabbed the benefits.

Locals demanded housing units for Shyam Bentakar and other poor residents who have been suffering a lot.PNN
