Bhubaneswar, Jan 23: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Bhubaneswar has been functioning without a ‘regular director’ and a registrar.
The apex institute has been operating from two temporary campuses here without regular director since August 19, 2014. The registrar post has not been filled up since October, 31, 2014. Currently both the posts are being handled by in-charges. According to sources, the unavailability of the top officials has delayed several IIT projects including coastal observatory at Konark.
“The appointment of the director will be done by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in New Delhi for which the first round of consultations has been over. The second round is scheduled to take place shortly to take a final call on the appointment of the director,” said a top IIT official here.
According to sources, all major decisions have been kept in abeyance due to non-availability of the director. “The major decision could not be taken without the nod of the director. The person in-charge is not authorised to take major decisions for which many tasks and projects are pending,” said the official.
The absence of the registrar has confounded the woes of the institute as many academic activities are held up.
Notably, the IIT selection panel here has the power to appoint a registrar. At least 90 candidates had responded to a notification issued for appointment of a registrar, but none has been recruited so far.
“We had notified for the post in November, 2014. The process is underway and hopefully the institute will get a new registrar in a couple of months,” assured the official.
