IMD issues thunderstorm warning in the state

Bhubaneswar: The Regional Meteorological Department today issued thunderstorm and lightning alert for 12 Odisha districts in next 24 hours.

According to the report, “Latest satellite imageries indicate that moderate thunderstorm with lightning and light rainfall is likely to occur at over the districts of Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Sundergarh, Deogarh, Bhadrak, Balasore, Jajpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kandhamal, Nayagarh and Ganjam.”

“We have issued warning for the next 24 hours. Some places in northern districts of Odisha including Nayagarh, Khurda and few places over Kandhamal will experience lightning accompanied by rainfall. The wind speed will remain between 15 and 20 km per hour during these hours,” informed Meteorologist of Bhubaneswar Regional Meteorological Centre, LK Giri.

Keeping this in mind, the IMD has also alerted the people to avoid moving in open areas particularly in the afternoon.

A cyclonic circulation is extending upto 0.9 km above main sea level, and currently lies over interior Odisha and neighbouring areas due to which rainfall will occur at some places in northern districts and one or two places in southern Odisha, stated Giri.

“Rainfall will occur in many places of the State till March 19. However, the amount will considerably decrease after that,” added Giri.
