Bhubaneswar: A Class XII student of BJEM School Tuesday tried to immolate himself near CBSE office in protest against the faulty evaluation of Class XII papers under the Bhubaneswar zone.
Agitated over alleged irregularities in evaluation process, the parents association and the students have resumed their protests Tuesday at the CBSE office after they had called off their stir for a couple of days as the officials had sought time to verify the anomalies.
After an inconclusive meeting between the parents association and CBSE regional officer Sumita Singh, BJEM student Mrityunjay Padhi poured kerosene over himself in a bid to immolate. The police rescued the youth and took him to Sahid Nagar police station. Meanwhile, the agitated students decided to launch a hunger strike till their revaluation begins. Nikon Naimisham, a student of DAV Chandrasekharpur, who scored less marks than her expectations said the affected students ad parents would continue to fight till their last breath.
The parents association, meanwhile, has been demanding the resignation of regional officer Sumita Singh as ‘‘she has been non-sympathetic towards the students’ problems.
Meanwhile, parents’ association convener Sudarshan Das told reporters that Orissa High Court will hear Wednesday cases of 17 students who had moved the court against the evaluation irregularities.
DAV parents association vice-president Pradipta Nayak said the CBSE regional office has evinced no commitment to initiate the process of re-evaluation. ‘‘The officials, on the other hand, showed some answer scripts which showed no sign of evaluation,’’ Nayak said.
When contacted by this paper, Sumita Singh denied media reports that less than 10 per cent of students had applied for re-evaluation of their papers. She also urged the students not to waste their time and seek admission into various professional colleges of their choice.
Earlier, the agitating students formed a human chain and took out a candle light procession before the parents’ association members met CBSE officials.
