Bhubaneswar: Odisha Higher Education Department has launched the pilot implementation of a student biometric attendance system through the Higher Education Information Management System (HIMS) in 10 higher education institutions (HEIs).
The move is aimed at ensuring transparent and reliable digital recording, monitoring and verification of student attendance, particularly for students benefiting from the government’s ‘Gyanodaya – Shikshya Ru Samruddhi’ scheme.
Beneficiaries are required to maintain a minimum of 75% attendance. Their attendance will be verified through biometric or other digital modes of recording integrated with HIMS.
The pilot system was implemented in MPC Autonomous College, Mayurbhanj; Vikram Dev University, Jayapur; Utkal University, Bhubaneswar; Model Degree College, Boudh; Government Degree College, Tentulikhunti; Udayanath Autonomous College, Adaspur; BJB Autonomous College, Bhubaneswar; Kantabanji Vocational Degree College, Balangir; Bhadrak Autonomous College, Bhadrak and Prananath Autonomous College, Khordha.
Each institution has been directed to nominate a nodal officer to coordinate the implementation and work with the HIMS technical team.
The institutions have also been asked to closely monitor the functioning of the system and promptly report technical or operational issues related to student enrolment, biometric capture, attendance recording and data synchronisation.
The department said the experience and feedback from the 10 pilot institutions would be used to assess, refine and stabilise the system before its proposed state-wide rollout in other eligible higher education institutions.
