In-form Kiran Manisha bags title

Bhubaneswar, Dec 15: WGM Kiran Manisha Mohanty of Orissa, representing LIC emerged champion in the All India FIDE Rating Chess Championships which concluded here Tuesday.
Kiran Manisha, Mary Ann Gomes, Bhakti Kulkarni and Ankitha Goud Palle – all ended with six points each in the eight-round contest. However, Kiran Manisha was declared the winner after implementation of the Buccholz tie-breaker system. On the final day, all the top four drew their respective matches to finish with six points each.
For her efforts Kiran Manisha went home richer by `75,000 while Mary Ann earned `60,000 for finishing as the first runner-up.
There was another Orissa player in the top 10 – Rutumbara Bidhar who finished the competition with five points.
Nigam bags silver
Nigam Parida of Orissa bagged a silver medal in the 3 position rifle event for men at the National Shooting Championships in New Delhi. Nigam, thus became the first shooter from Orissa to achieve the distinction of winning a medal in a national meet. However, he is representing the Services team in the event.
Umpire selected
Jeevan Ballav Samal of Orissa State Table Tennis Association has been selected to officiate in the 20th Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships, starting December 16 at Surat. A qualified umpire, Jeevan has in the past, officiated in many international and national-level events.
MPS in final
Mothers’ Public School kept their chances open for a double crown by entering the finals of both the boys’ and girls’ segments of the Akram-Snehasish Memorial Vth Inter-school Basketball Championships. The tournament is currently on at the Unit-I basketball Courts here.
In the boys’ semifinal MPS defeated Sahid Nagar HS 52-43 in a nail-biting contest while in the girls’ match they trounced KISS 41-14.
In the boys’ final MPS will meet KIIT International School while in the girls’ summit clash, they will take on Unit-IV Girls’ HS. The latter defeated the eves from KIIT , 38-12.
