Bhubaneswar, March 23: Low cost airline IndiGo has decided to introduce a direct flight from Bhubaneswar to Kolkata April 15. The move would give a much needed fillip to the domestic aviation sector the state.
Kolkata-Bhubaneswar flight (6E 9297) would take off from Kolkata at 3pm and land at Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) at 4pm. The Bhubaneswar-Kolkata flight (6E 9298) would leave BPIA at 4.30 pm and land at Kolkata airport at 5.35pm.
Now, IndiGo operates two Kolkata-bound flights (6E 511 and 6E 294) from city airport. Besides, GoAir’s (G8 244) Bhubaneswar-Kolkata flight is also available from BPIA.
Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials said many of the regular flyers had urged the AAI to introduce one more Kolkata-bound flight from BPIA at affordable prices.
“Since there is heavy traffic on Bhubaneswar-Kolkata route, the airline has kept the fares nominal to maintain high occupancy in its new flight to Kolkata,” airport director Sharad Kumar said.
With this, IndiGo will operate 12 daily scheduled flights while GoAir is operating three and Air India four services daily. The domestic aviation market improved significantly in Orissa after GoAir commenced operations October 26, 2014 and unveiled three daily flights to New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata.
Meanwhile, GoAir’s G8 161 Bhubaneswar-Delhi flight got delayed by over two hours because of foggy condition in the city.
