Jamankira: In a shocking incident, a woman threw her 27-day-old niece into a well at Patrapali village under Jamankira police limits in Sambalpur district causing her death.
The accused identified as Yasoda Singh(28) picked up the baby when she was sleeping and dumped her in the well, police said, adding, the woman seemed to be suffering from mental disorder. Based on a complaint lodged by baby’s mother Shanti Singh (32), police registered a case and arrested Yashoda. She was remanded in judicial custody as her bail petition was rejected by the court.
According to reports, Shanti, daughter of Madan Singh of the village had gone to relive herself leaving the sleeping baby on a verandah following an oil massage. Meanwhile, her mentally-challenged younger appeared on the scene and picked up the infant. Suddenly, she moved towards a nearby well and threw the baby into it.
Shanti, after her return, raised an alarm and searched frantically for her daughter. On being informed by Yasoda, neighbours rushed to the spot. A villager jumped into the well to rescue the kid but she was found dead. The incident sent shockwaves in the area. PNN
