Inmate still missing from Barbil sub-jail

Barbil: Three days ago, a jail inmate escaped from Barbil sub-jail in Keonjhar. Police and jail staff have intensified search operations to nab the undertrial, Sawan Patra of Gadha Hutting.

Notably, Sawan was arrested in connection with a bike theft August 1. He was sent to jail after his bail was rejected. He was asked to assist in cooking work in August 13 afternoon. He somehow managed to climb atop the administrative building of the sub-jail and scaled out of the boundary wall.  However, no one was aware of his escape till evening.

When counting of jail inmates was started for dinner, one was found to be falling short. The jail staff started an investigation. On checking the CCTV footage, it was clear that the inmate was detected to be escaping out of the jail.

Jailer Sudhansu Shekhar Behera said that an investigation is continuing. He admitted that such incidents happened due to negligence of duty. “Jail warders Sanjit Kumar Nayak and Bijay Kumar Nayak were issued show cause notices,” he added.
