Inter-state ganja smuggling gang busted

Jeypore: Police Wednesday busted an inter-state ganja smuggling gang and arrested eight persons during a raid near Patraput under Sadar police limits in Koraput district. Over 10 quintals of contraband was seized along with three vehicles that were used for transportation of the contraband, police said.

A case was registered and the accused produced in court, police added. Borigumma SDPO Udhab Charan Nayak revealed the incident at a media meet organised at Jeypore sadar police limits Wednesday.

According to sources, three ganja-laden vehicles from Panasput panchayat in Malkangiri district were en route to Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh. Acting on a tip-off, a special police squad conducted a raid and intercepted a truck and two Boleros with UP number plates near Patraput were seized. On search, police recovered 45 sacks of contraband weighing more than 1005 kgs stuffed in 40 sacks of coconuts in the vehicles.

Later, police arrested Hrudaya Narayan Panda (48) of Saidabad in Allahabad district, Akhilesh Tiwary (27) of Bhida in Allahabad district, Gyan Chand (58) of Jalaput, V Ramkrushna (35) of Andhra Pradesh, Laba Talab (30), Ramchandra Hantal (20), Krushna Hantal (23) of Kumuduguda under Chitrakunda police limits in Malkangiri district and Ramesh Panigrahy of Jalaput.

The eight accused were produced in court, SDPO Nayak added. PNN
