Jaleswar: Tension ran high at Gopi Kishan community health centre (CHC) here in Balasore district Thursday after a doctor declared an allegedly alive patient dead.
That said, the patient — a 12-year old boy – was certified dead at another hospital. Angry locals, however, ransacked the CHC and pelted stones at the on duty doctor alleging medical negligence.
On being informed, police reached the hospital and brought situation under control. Adequate police forces have been deployed there to avoid any further escalation of tension.
According to the police, the boy – a member of the minor community — fell ill Thursday. A dentist attended him after his family members rushed him to the CHC. The doctor conducted several tests and then declared his dead. Later another doctor, identified as Ganesh Chandra Pal, was consulted but he also gave the same answer.
Convinced, the family members brought the body back home. It was when the family members were preparing for the last rites, they noticed a little movement on the body that made them believe he was alive.
They rushed him to a private hospital in Balasore, but the doctors there certified the boy ‘dead on arrival’.
Alleging negligence on the part of the doctors at Gopi Kishan Bhatt CHC, irked family members created a ruckus. They ransacked the hospital and staged a blockade on Jaleswar-Chandaneswar main road by putting burning tyres.
The agitation was going on at the time of filing this report despite police trying to assuage the angry mob. Locals alleged that the service at the CHC has caved in as sanctioned doctor posts are lying vacant for months together.
