BHUBANESWAR: As many as 45 paintings and art works of young artist Medha Nayak, hailing from Balasore, caught the attention of visitors at the Modern Art Gallery in the city, where a solo painting exhibition was Bheld Sunday. The exhibition titled ‘My Intimate Recollections’ showcased the memories of Medha who was born and brought up in a village and reminiscences of her life in Delhi where she studied. Talking to Orissa POST, Medha said, “I used to visit jungles with my father during vacations. Later, it became my passion to portray my feelings on canvas. I turned everything into paintings.” One of her paintings represents a Delhi street. Speaking about it, a young artist said, “There was a Galli (street) in Delhi where all competitive exam aspirants bought books. But it seemed gloomy to me, so I painted it. My friends were enthused when they saw it.” Medha said she loved to paint village scenes, but later she shifted to Delhi to do a Master’s and started painting urban sceneries and other objects she liked.
Though it was her first exhibition, her works seem like an exhibition of an established artist. Medha believes that painting gives her a healing touch, a medicine for emotional troubles, and it helped her overcome emotions during distress moments. She also thinks the life of an artist is not lonely. Medha is a good artist as well as a good student. She did her post graduation in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University while now she is doing her PhD from the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER). Her father Subrat Nayak feels being proud of her daughter as her creations pulled art lovers under one roof and she was hugely lauded. “When she is upset or disturbed, she starts doing paintings and eventually I can see smile on her face that blossoms while painting. Her emotions heal.” Adviser to Orissa State Planning Board Rabi Narayan Das and former Indian Ambassador Abasara Beuria were present at the inaugural ceremony. The exhibition is open to visitors till October 14 from 11 am to 7 pm
