Brahmapur: A jail warder was found dead in his official quarters in Odisha’s Ganjam district Friday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Sibanand Swain, 35, a resident of Nuapalli near Asika. He had joined the Digapahandi sub-jail August 5 after being transferred from Puri, they said.
Swain was staying alone in the official quarter, where his body was found hanging. His family members lived in their native village.
“The exact cause of his death will be known only after the investigation is complete,” Patapur police station inspector-in-charge Dipti Ranjan Behera said.
He said Swain’s body was sent for post-mortem examination.
Senior jail officials from Berhampur and the Sanakhemundi tahasildar visited the spot and took stock of the situation.
Digapahandi sub-jail jailor Radhashyam Behera said Swain was scheduled to be on duty from 2 pm to 10 pm.
When he failed to report for duty, a staff member went to his quarters and knocked on the door. After receiving no response, the staff member called out to him through a window and saw Swain hanging inside the room, following which the jailor was informed.
“We immediately informed the police after receiving information about the incident,” Behera said.
