Rayagada, Feb 11: The Janani Surakhya Yojana, a Centre-sponsored scheme aimed at decreasing neo-natal and maternal deaths, has failed to reach the beneficiaries in this tribal-dominated district due to the lackadaisical approach of the officials concerned.
Here is a case in point. Mamita Kadraka, a native of Karadanga under Muniguda block has been waiting for more than 40 days to get the first installment of financial assistance under the scheme.
Mamita was admitted to the district headquarters hospital after she developed labour pain December 30. But, the doctors referred her to Berhampur-based MKCG Medical College and Hospital.
However, her poverty-stricken family decided not to admit her to MKCG hospital. They rather admitted her to the Christian Hospital at Bissamkatak. But, there also the doctors referred Mamita to MKCG hospital. Finally, Mamita’s family took her to the referral hospital where she delivered a baby girl January 1. She also underwent post-delivery treatment for a week. During the period, her family members had sought the hospital authorities’ financial help.
The authorities had told them that Mamita is eligible for financial assistance from the government under the Janani Surakhya Yojana. Her family then produced several documents for this purpose. Under the scheme, `1,400 is deposited in the bank account of the beneficiary in the first phase within 24 hours of delivery. But, Mamita is waiting to get the first installment money even after 40 days of delivery.
She is now undergoing treatment at the Rayagada district headquarters hospital. Her family members have also submitted the requisite documents to the district headquarters hospital authorities, but to no avail. They have urged the district administration to act on their application and provide the assistance at the earliest.
