Bowlers fashion Orissa victory

Orissa bowlers put up a splendid show to help Orissa beat Jharkhand by 58 runs in a match of the Senior Women’s T20 league at Chennai, Sunday.

Put into bat first, Orissa openers Madhuri Meheta (40, 38b, 6×4) and Madhusmita Behera (19) started cautiously as they steered the team to 51 runs in 7.1 overs before the later fell to Nadia Chaudhury. One down Sarita Meher (30, 34b, 3×4) along with Madhuri then put on another 40 runs for the second wicket by playing some delightful shots.

However, the loss of Madhuri in the 15th over triggered the collapse for Orissa as they lost their last eight wickets for just 40 runs, thanks to Bismah Hassan’s (5/19) brilliant spell.

Bismah ran riot through the Orissa middle order as she took two wickets in an over on two occasions in the 17th and 19th over to halt the opposition on 130/8 in 20 overs. Nadia Chaudhury and Neeru Manhas got one wicket apiece for Jharkhand.

In reply, Jharkhand started on a disastrous note as they lost skipper Meenu Singh Salathia cheaply for seven. Anju Devi (17) and Rubia Sayed (33, 33b, 3×4, 2×6) then stitched together 52 runs for the second wicket. But Orissa bowlers came back strongly taking four wickets within a space of three runs to virtually seal the match in their favour.

Madhusmita (2/10), Reemalaxmi Ekka (1/6), Rasanara Parwin (1/11), Rajashree Swain (1/18) and Sushree Dibyadarshini (1/5) were the wicket takers for Orissa.

Brief scores: Orissa 130/8 (Madhuri Meheta 40; Bismah Hassan 5/19) bt Jharkhand 72/6 in 20 overs (Rubia Sayed 33; Madhusmita Behera 2/10) by 52 runs.
