Japanese boost for state sportspersons

Bhubaneswar: Sportspersons at the Kalinga Stadium sports hostel here will get a huge boost as they will get the opportunity to be trained by Japanese coaches from 2018.

“There is an agreement signed between the Japan International Cooperative Agency (JICA) and the Union Finance Ministry. As per the agreement Japanese coaches will train sportspersons in swimming, badminton, table tennis and gymnastics,” stated Rajendra Pani, who is working as a coach under the state sports department at the Kalinga Stadium.

“Initially, the state decathletes will be coached by the Japanese coaches from March next year. Gradually coaches in other disciplines will arrive to train players of other disciplines,” Pani added.

A delegation from JICA visited the Kalinga Stadium here Wednesday and inspected the infrastructure and facilities. “They have expressed their satisfaction over the facilities here and termed them as world class,” Pani informed.

Team selected

A 24-member Orissa team comprising 15 male and seven female lifters along with two officials have been selected Wednesday by the Orissa Powerlifting Association for the National Powerlifting Championships at Alleppey, Kerala, August 14-19.

Head coach appointed

The Sesa Football Academy (SFA), Goa appointed Eduard Battle Basart as the head coach. Eduard has been associated with Barcelona Football Academy and FC Barcelona Youth Academy. He was also amongst the coaching staffs at Manchester United in past. Eduard has coached the Cyprus women first division players.
