Bhubaneswar, April 29: Orissa girl Jauna Murmu, representing ONGC, secured a bronze medal in the women’s 400 metres event of the 20th Federation Cup National Senior Athletic Championships at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, Friday.
She finished third with a timing of 53.37 seconds behind her teammate Puvamma (52.60) who bagged the silver. Kerlian Anilda Thomas secured the gold medal with a timing of 52.40 seconds.
Meanwhile, ace sprint-queens Dutee Chand and Srabani Nanda continued their splendid show as they qualified to the final of the 200 metres event. The final will be played Saturday.
Earlier Dutee and Srabani had bagged gold and silver medals respectively in the women’s 100 metres event Thursday. Dutee set a new national record in the event clocking 11.33 seconds, breaking the previous best by her statemate Rachita Panda (11.38 seconds in 2000). But the record couldn’t put her in the Rio qualification as the qualification cut off mark had been set at 11.32 seconds.
However, it was a forgettable day for the national record holder Amiya Mallick as he was forced to skip the 200 metres following his injury, which he had got during his 100 metres race, Thursday.
He had broken the previous national record of Abdul N Qureshi (10.30 seconds in 2010), with a timing of 10.26 seconds in the semifinal.
