Berhampur/G Udaygiri, Feb 2: The Class X student of Lingagad Ashram High School of Kandhamal who gave birth to a boy in the hostel January 23 was shifted to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital at Berhampur Sunday night along with the newborn after the condition of the baby, who developed jaundice, worsened.
The mother and baby were earlier being treated at a hospital in Phulbani.
The baby was being treated at the special neonatal care unit (SNCU) of the hospital, said sources, adding that the mother is alright. There is no need to panic as many babies are affected by the disease, said MKCG superintendent Dr Ashok Behera.
Meanwhile, the State Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) has directed the authorities and staff of the school to ensure that the girl who gave birth to a boy in the hostel January 23 appears for the High School Certificate (HSC) examination.
G Udaygiri welfare extension officer Manoranjan Panigrahi said the girl can appear for the examinations without much difficulty as the examinations for the Lingagad school will be conducted on the school premises.
SCPCR members Sandhyabati Pradhan and Rajalaxmi Dash interacted with headmaster-in-charge Santosh Kumar Rout and with other teachers and staff of the school Saturday. They also questioned the roommates of the girl about the sequence of events that led to her pregnancy.
District welfare officer Paramananda Prusty, district project coordinator Binodini Panda and district child protection officer Rashmita Karan accompanied the SCPCR members during their visit to the hostel.
MLA Yakub Pradhan had also visited the school Saturday.
