Basudevpur: A jilted lover attempted to kill Wednesday a minor girl by setting her on fire after pouring petrol on her at a village under Basudevpur Police limits in Bhadrak district. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the youth’s failure to win the girl’s heart led him to commit the heinous crime.
While the victim has been shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack from Basudevpur Government Hospital, the accused is still at large.
Sources said that it had been a one-sided affair with the girl constantly rebuffing the advances made by the youth. In her statement to the police, the victim said that the youth came to her house Wednesday and proposed to her. When she refused, the youth poured petrol on her and set her on fire.
Family members rushed the girl in a critical condition to Basudevpur Government Hospital at about 8.00pm from where she was later shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack. Prior to that, police reached the Basudevpur hospital and recorded the statement of the girl. The victim’s father told the police that the accused entered the house when the girl was alone and took advantage of the situation to commit the crime.
Police have launched a manhunt to nab the accused.
