Bhubaneswar, March 25: Jyoti Ranjan Padhi of Orissa emerged champion of the VIth Bhubaneswar All India Fide Rating Chess Championships, which concluded here Wednesday.
Jyoti clinched the title with seven points after the end of the eighth and the final round. In his last match, he outwitted compatriot Ramen Karmakar.
Binu Sebastian of Tamil Nadu and K Sai Raj Gopal of Andhra Pradesh also finished with seven points each. But they ended being the first and second runner-up on the basis of Bucculoz tie-breaker system. Jyoti bagged a cash prize of `20,000 along with the championship trophy. The first runner-up and second runner-up took home `15,000 and 12,000 along with the runners-up trophies respectively.
Other prizes: (U-7 boys’) Sriyansh Das; (U-7 girls’) Ankita Sahoo; (U-9 boys’) Soyansree Mohanty (U-9 girls’): Sradha Suman Jena.
71 players share lead
Seventy one players are leading the pack with two points each after the completion of the second round of the IIIrd IS All India Fide Rating chess tournament, which was inaugurated at Cuttack, Friday.
Third seed Bishal Patnaik of Orissa got the better of R Jayanth in the second round.
Ganesh selected
Ganesh Nath of Orissa has been selected in the men’s kho kho team of India probables for the Asian Kho Kho Championships at Azmer, March 27-April 6. Ganesh is the first men’s kho kho player from the state to achieve the feat.
