Nayagarh: A Dalit family was rendered homeless after fellow villagers vandalised their house and threatened them to leave the village following the decision of a kangaroo court Sunday night.
The prevailing rain compounded the lives of the family comprising seven members including two elderly persons and minors as they had no roof to take shelter under. Rain compounded the problems of the family forcing them to approach the local police for help.
The bizarre incident was reported from Deuli village under Nuagaon block in Nayagarh district.
According to sources, Bilasi Nahak, with no land of his own, lived in a thatched hut built on government land. However, some villagers had their eye on the land and threatened Nahak to break the house and move to some other place.
When Nahak expressed his inability to move all of a sudden and asked for some more time, the villagers threatened him. Later, some villagers Monday morning arrived at the place and vandalised his house.
The family members lodged a written complaint with the local police and later went to meet the DM. However, in the absence of the DM, they put their complaint in the complaint box. Anticipating threat to their lives, they demanded security.
When contacted, Sadar IIC Manorama Malli said a police team has been sent to the village for a probe. The villagers had agreed to solve the matter amicably. If the matter is not solved, a case will be registered against the villagers, she added.
