Karate meet starts

Bhubaneswar: The 16th Inter-School and Senior Federation Cup Karate Championships was inaugurated at Railway Indoor Stadium here Saturday.

Junagarh MLA, Captain Dibya Sankar Mishra graced the event as chief guest and lauded officials for organising the event. Seishin Karate India head, Shihan Premjit Sen, West-Bengal Karate Association chairperson Sensei Jaydev Mondal and Utkal Karate School founder-cum-vice president of Hari Prasad Patnaik were among others who spoke during the inaugural function.

Two hundred and fifty contestants from 12 states are participating in the tournament. The mega championships will end, December 17.

 

Rajesh emerges leader

Rajesh Kumar Nayak emerged sole leader with 7.5 points after the completion of the eighth round of the All Orissa Open Chess tournament at Puri, Saturday. Following him in joint second position are Vaibhav Mishra Rajendra Kumar Sahu, Rajat Kumar Sahoo and Ansuman samal who all are on 6.5 points respectively.

Rajesh and Vaibhav, the two main contenders for the title here played out a stalemate in their sixth round encounter. In fact it was a day of drawn encounters. The only two decisive games happened when Mohan Das Pradhan of Koraput and Manoj Kumar Panigrahi of Puri defeated Gopin Murmu of Dhenkanal and Soumyaranjan Mishra of Khurda respectively.
