Visakhapatnam: Karnataka’s star-studded batting line-up, comprising the likes of K L Rahul and Karun Nair, collapsed as the team folded for 88 against Tamil Nadu on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy quarterfinal clash here Friday.
Pacers Aswin Crist (6/31) and T Natarajan (3/18) ran through Karnataka batting order, sharing nine wickets between them. Both KL Rahul (4) and Karun Nair (14) failed to contribute to the team cause.
At close of play, Tamil Nadu were 111 for four, a lead of 23 runs. Dinesh Karthik (31 batting) and Abhinav Mukund (three batting) were at the crease at stumps.
Fine Nadeem show
Left-arm orthodox bowler Shahbaz Nadeem (5/75) returned with a five-wicket haul to help Jharkhand reduce Haryana to 251 for seven on the opening day of the Rani quarterfinal at Vadodara.
Nadeem singlehandedly demolished Haryana’s top-order accounting for the first five batsmen to give the initial edge to Jharkhand. He picked up the wickets of Nitin Saini (22), Shubham Rohilla (18), Shivam Chauhan (23), Chirag Bishnoi (41) and Rajat Paliwal (42). Sanjay Pahal (38 batting) and Harshal Patel (22 batting) were at the crease at the close of play.
Lad, Tare steady boat
Siddhesh Lad (101 batting, 196b, 15×4, 1×6) scored an unbeaten century and also put on a crucial 105-run stand with Aditya Tare (73, 148b, 14×4) to help Mumbai overcome early jitters and reach 250 for five against Hyderabad on the opening day of their Ranji quarterfinal at Raipur.
Mumbai got off to a poor start, losing four wickets for just 34 runs with Chama Milind (3/64) accounting for the top three. But then the fifth wicket stand between Lad and Tare helped Mumbai prosper. After Tare’s dismissal Abhishek Nayar (46 batting, 79b, 7×4) was involved in an unfinished stand of 111 runs with Lad to put Mumbai in a position of strength.
