Karunanidhi critical, supporters throng hospital

Chennai: Thousands of supporters gathered outside Kauvery hospital in Chennai after the condition of DMK chief M Karunanidhi turned critical, Sunday evening.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister E Palaniswami cut short his tour to Coimbatore and headed for Chennai to meet him in the hospital.

Karunanidhi’s family stayed by his side in the hospital, where he was admitted, Friday.

Earlier, vice president Venkaiah Naidu had paid a visit.

After Mr Naidu’s visit, a tweet by the managers of Mr Karunanidhi’s official handle tweeted: “Hon’ble Vice President Venkiah Naidu, Tamilnadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit met and enquired about our leader Kalignar’s health (sic).”

While the hospital authorities and family had stated his condition was fine Saturday, the 95-year-old DMK patriarch’s condition deteriorated Sunday evening.

Karunanidhi, a five-time Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu was recovering from a long illness when he contracted the infection and developed a fever.

This morning, Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’ Brien met Mr Karunanidhi’s son MK Stalin and daughter Kanimozhi at Kauvery Hospital to inquire about health of DMK chief.
