Kendrapara District Collector Samarth Verma’s initiative provides new hope for student Amrut Mohan Rout

Kendrapara: Kendrapara District Collector Samarth Verma has reportedly played a Good Samaritan role for a meritorious poverty-stricken youth by arranging financial assistance to fulfil his dream of going for medical coaching.

According to sources, Amrut Mohan Rout is the son of a Shikhya Sahayak Ambuj Kumar Rout, the sole bread winner of his family. Amrut has topped the district and stood second in the state by securing 97.33 per cent marks in the Class X Board examination. Amrut Mohan has also won accolades for his academic brilliance and determination despite financial constraints. However, the five-member family including his grandmother his dependant on his father who earns Rs 10,000 per month.

“Though I have interest and aptitude to pursue medical science, due to financial problems, it is difficult to carry forward the dream. However, I have taken admission in Plus II science in Kendrapara Autonomous College. When I met the District Collector recently to receive felicitations for my academic courses I explained my difficulties,” said Amrut Mohan.

“I urged the Collector to arrange a financial assistance of Rs 5.90 lakh for my Plus II course fees, accommodation, food and cost of medical coaching fees. He had assured me that my needs will be looked after,” added Amrut Mohan.

Smarth Verma then wrote to R Veenil Krishna, Managing Director of Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) to provide sponsorship for the meritorious student. On receipt of the recommendation, the OMC sanctioned a financial assistance of Rs 4,00,000 towards the sponsorship of Amrut Mohan for his plus II course. In the first phase, Rs 2,00,000 would be released to  Amrut Mohan’s account for his admission, hostel expenses and to buy books and materials.

In the second phase (2020-2021) of the academic year, the remaining Rs 2,00,000 would be provided to Rout, informed Kendrapara emergency officer Sambit Kumar Satapathy.

“As I have to earn my livelihood along with providing treatment to my wife suffering from cardiac ailments and also to take care of my paralytic mother, I would like to thank the District Collector for taking timely action to arrange financial assistance for my son’s higher studies,” said Ambuj Kumar.

“But for him, it would have been a daunting task on my part to meet the aspirations of my son to pursue a medical career,” added Ambuj Kumar.

When contacted, Verma said Amrut is a meritorious boy and the state government has several projects to encourage poor and meritorious students to pursue higher studies. “I would like to thank the Odisha Mining Corporation, especially its MD R Veenil Krishna for sanctioning Rs ,00,000 for Amrut’s higher education”, said Verma.
