Cuttack, Jan 9: Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) emerged champions of the Vth Rajat Memorial Inter-School cockey tournament scraping past Giridharijew Vidyapitha, Holipur 4-3 in a thrilling final at the Orissa Police High School Ground here, Saturday.
Binay Bilasan Ekka scored a hat-trick and Sadhu Kirsani struck once for KISS. Sagar Nayak scored a brace and Sashikanta Moahnty scored once for Holipur in an encounter where fortunes swung like a pendulum.
Rajesh Bhoi of Holipur was adjudged the best player of the tournament while Binay Bilsan Ekka of KISS was awarded after emerging the highest goal-scorer in the event.
Lancers start practice
Kalinga Lancers players started their practice session for the fourth edition of the Hockey India League (HIL) at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Saturday.
All the team members under the watchful eyes of newly-appointed coach Mark William Hager and trainer John David focussed mainly on physical training and fitness. Hager gave his valuable tips regarding penalty corner conversions to the players.
“The practice session has not yet started fully and it will reach its peak within the next couple of days,” stated Stanley Victor Minz.
“We are looking for a positive start. Hopefully we will win the first couple of matches and that will really help us set up momentum,” stated Hager. “All the players are in a good frame of mind and we are looking forward for some improvement in our performance this time,” he added.
Chess tourney
Cuttack District Chess Association will organise the Cuttack District Chess Championships here January 16-18. The tournament will be played in four categories and there is a prize purse of `19, 300 overall.
