Koraput: A year after the inauguration of the Saheed Laxman Nayak (SLN) Medical College and Hospital here, the poor quality of construction is causing grave inconvenience to the students and patients here.
Expressing concern over the poor condition of the building, Koraput Collector has written to the Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi urging him to take necessary steps to repair the damages at the earliest.
The condition of the building has degraded with continuous leakage of water and walls were found soaked after the rains. Water leakage is found in the auditorium, classrooms and library. The continuous leakage has affected the ceilings and walls of the building.
Though the district administration had written to the Works Department secretary nearly six months back, there has been no response from the authorities yet. As a result, and no repair work has been undertaken.
Another letter was written July 29, 2018 to the Koraput Division Roads and Building (R&B) executive engineer, who had assured to probe the inferior construction quality. But repairs were not carried out, the Collector stated in the letter.
The Collector said that water leakage into the building came to his notice during his visit to the medical college August 27.
Central Minister Jual Oram, ex-Chief Minister Giridhar Gomanga and other BJP leaders visited SLN Medical College and blamed the state government for not giving proper focus on the college.
Oram said SLN Medical College was a dream for the people of undivided Koraput district and its inception had created a lot of hope among the public, but the poor quality construction and maintenance have made the condition of the college miserable. Shortage of doctors and poor treatment are other drawbacks.
Former CM Giridhar Gomango said the state government should pay special attention to the medical college. The SLN Medical College and Hospital was inaugurated September 4, 2017.
