Bhubaneswar: K Murali Krishna and Krishnika Birok emerged champions in the men’s and women’s categories of the IVth Nalinikanta Mohanty Memorial State Open Ranking badminton tournament, which concluded at the ECoR Railway Stadium here Sunday.
In the men’s category, local favourite and sixth seed Murali caused an upset in the final to stun top seed Abhimanyu Bagarti 21-16, 21-17 to clinch the title.
In the women’s segment top seed Krishnika of Rourkela maintained her supremacy to edge out Yashashree Samal of Khurda 21-16, 13-21, 21-16 in the final.
The local boy Ashis Kumar Sethi achieved a double crown. He clinched the U-19 boys’ singles title beating Prajesh Kumar Murmu 21-18, 21-15 and then partnered Shivsundar Mahalik to win the U-19 boys’ doubles trophy beating Sibashish Bishi and Soumya Ranjan Panda 21-16, 18-21, 21-19.
Orissa Governor SC Jamir was present as the chief guest and distributed the prizes.
