Birmaharajpur/Sonepur, Jan 12: Vigilance sleuths Tuesday arrested an obstetrics cum gynaecology doctor at the sub-divisional hospital here on charge of receiving bribe from a person for conducting a Cesarean section on his wife.
However, residents here claimed that some unscrupulous people tried to trap Dr Kiran Prava Dungdung after hatching a conspiracy against her. As the news of her arrest spread, over a hundred residents including women and attendants staged a dharna on the hospital premises. They detained the Vigilance officials for several hours. The doctor was released on bail late in the night.
According to sources, Jayanti Meher, wife of Ranjan Meher, belonging to Nuapal village under Ullunda block in Subarnapur district, was being treated by Dr Dungdung. Jayanti delivered a baby boy through Cesarean section conducted by Dr Dungdung January 8.
However, after delivery, the doctor demanded Rs 3,600 from Ranjan. Even though Ranjan expressed his inability to pay, the doctor was asking for the money.
Finding no other option, Ranjan lodged a complaint with Sambalpur vigilance SP in this connection. The vigilance had registered a case and laid a trap to nab her.
As per the plan, Ranjan paid the money to the doctor on the hospital premises Tuesday and she was keeping the notes in her pocket, when Vigilance sleuths arrested her.
The raid team included Bolangir vigilance DSP Abhiram Kar, Sonepur DSP Laxman Kumar Jal, inspectors Ramakant Sae, Sharat Mohapatra and Saroj Sahu.
According to residents, the specialist post in O&G department of the hospital was lying vacant for five years. After several requests by residents, Dr Dungdung was appointed a year ago.
People of the area have been getting good service after her appointment. They fumed that arrest of the doctor would badly affect the healthcare facility in the area.
