Bhubaneswar, May 10: Passengers at the Bhubaneswar railway station are facing a difficult time as 16 liquid crystal display (LCD) television sets that were recently installed there to display information about the arrival and departure of trains have stopped working.
Information on the running of trains is not being displayed on these sets for a fortnight, according to sources.
East Coast Railway (ECoR) is taking steps to resume airing train running information after nearly 21 LCD sets at all four platforms beamed pornographic video clips January 14, 2012, for nearly eight minutes. ECoR terminated the contract with the firm and floated fresh tenders to restart the information dissemination.
However, passengers are again facing inconvenience with the information not being aired for many days now. As the LCD screens are blank, passengers have to come at the concourse area outside platform one to get information on the arrival and departure of trains from a giant LED screen next to the ticket counters.
“The Railways should understand that the LCD train information system is quite helpful for passengers who wait for their trains at different platforms,” said a passenger, Prasant Panda. ECoR should ensure that the information service is restarted immediately as it beams information that is crucial to passengers, said Romila Singha, another passenger. “If proper information is displayed by LCDs, passengers can easily reach platforms where the train arriving or from where it is departing,” she said.
Divisional commercial manager of ECoR’s Khurda Road division, Lingaraj Nanda, said the information display service is yet to take off as tenders are being floated to engage a competent firm. “We would soon take steps to start the service,” he assured.
However, a magazine and newspaper vendor at platform No. 1 said on condition of anonymity that the LCDs are not working for about a fortnight but were functioning earlier.
