Jeypore, Jan 31: Handing down a ruling in a murder case of 2013, a local court Saturday awarded life imprisonment to a man.
Uddhab Munda Gudia of Badapada village under Boipariguda police limits in Koraput district had killed his infant son July 16, 2013. The additional district judge court, which heard the case, also slapped a fine of `15,000 on him in default of which he would have to undergo six-month additional jail.
The ADJ court had convicted Uddhab in the murder case Friday and fixed Saturday for handing down the
punishment.
According to the case diary, Uddhab had doubt on the fidelity of his wife Chanchala.
When Chanchala had given birth to a baby boy, he suspected that the baby was born out of an illicit relationship.
He had a spat with his wife on the issue at night on the fateful day. Later, he strangled his son to death while he was sleeping. His wife had lodged a complaint in this regard with Boipariguda police 10 days after the incident. On the basis of the complaint, police registered a case and started investigation.
Police exhumed the body of the deceased in presence of a magistrate and sent it for autopsy. They had later arrested the accused and forwarded him to court. Taking all the evidence and statements recorded by the witnesses into consideration, the ADJ court declared Uddhab guilty under Sections 201,302 and 506 of Indian Penal Code and awarded life term to him.
The court also directed the Orissa Legal Services Authority to provide some assistance to the victim’s family on the request of the public prosecutor.
