Local contractor dies in Koraput district, family alleges murder over extortion

Koraput: A contractor was murdered by some unidentified miscreants over extortion at Kunduli village under Pottangi police limits in Koraput district, family of the deceased man alleged Thursday.

The contractor had been continuously receiving extortion calls for the last few days. He had also agreed to pay the demanded amount to the ill-motivated callers, a member of the family stated.

According to sources, the 65-year-old contractor was identified as Ram Khil of Hatapada area. He had got the work order for a project of Koraput lift irrigation department, which is underway at Kunduli.

Four to five armed persons came to the project site at around 5.00pm Wednesday evening and had discussion with the man. Later, it turned into severe altercation and the miscreants attacked the contractor with sharp weapons leading to death, an eyewitness said.

The miscreants immediately fled from the spot after Ram fell on the ground in a pool of blood and became unconscious. The man was later rushed to Kunduli community health centre (CHC) where the doctors at the hospital declared him ‘brought dead’.

Pottangi police station IIC Kaibalya Seth rushed to the spot after being informed by local villagers about the incident. Police have launched an investigation into the incident, the IIC expressed.
