Gunpur: With the onset of summer, residents of Gunpur area in Rayagada district are now staring at acute drinking water crisis. The various drinking water projects are unable to fulfill the thirst of the locals, as most of the projects are lying defunct.
The main drinking water project is out of action now in Sourapradhanguda area under Gunpur Municipality Corporation.The locals visited the departmental engineer and gave him a memorandum mentioning to reconstruct the drinking water projects in their city.
The drinking water problem is acute in colonies like Gopalnagar, Sekharnagar, Rameswarnagar and Marthiguda. The sole tube-well in the village is now unable to cater to the drinking water requirements for the colony people.
The state government has been saying that all steps have been taken to reduce the drinking water problem in the district. But the district administration has failed to provide sufficient drinking water to the locals.
To provide drinking water to locals of the cities a treatment plant was made by the government in 2013 with the cost worth of more than Rs8 crores. But now that the project has lost its direction, the plant has failed to provide water to the all residents of this area.
There is no consistency in supply of drinking water in these areas. Sometimes the water comes and sometimes not.
The municipality department has a time schedule to provide water to the people. The water is supplied to the people two hours in morning time and two hours in day time. But situation are like this the water does not come even the people are waiting for more than five hours.
The locals alleged that despite repeated complaints, no concern steps have been taken yet by the authorities. Locals threatened to the administration that if proper steps will be not taken to overcome this problem then they will go for a protest.
