Bhubaneswar, Jan 6: The Nandankanan Zoological Park’s lone zebra Tuesday died of illness after being treated for over past six months here.The zebra was suffering from rheumatic fever over past six months and was treated at veterinary hospital at the zoo. It stopped eating five days back and was on liquid diet before succumbing to illness Tuesday.
The tall animal was one of the main attractions in the zoo. Zoo staff are a heartbroken lot after the death of the ailing zebra despite being given best treatment, said an official.
“When you take care of animals there are ups and downs, it pains more when you work with endangered species,” said a keeper at the enclosure. Meanwhile, NZP has already secured the state government’s permission to import four zebras and as many lions from Israel’s Tel Aviv Zoo after a span of 15 years.
