Looters on prowl, night commuters unsafe

Bhubaneswar: Looters had a field day in the capital city Saturday as there was a spike in the number of looting cases reported to various police stations Sunday. Around six looting cases, one each at Satyanagar area and Xavier square area and four loots at different places under Khandagiri police limits were reported Saturday night.
All the victims were looted by the miscreants at gun point. The looters carrying guns also clicked selfies with their victims after the loot.
The looters robbed lakhs of rupees, gold ornaments and other valuables worth several lakhs of rupees in these incidents. The victims included two college students, wife of an agricultural department officer and a contractor.
The contractor, Sudeep Tripathy, told Orissa POST, “I stopped at a beetle shop while on my way home by my car Saturday night. Meanwhile, around nine bike-borne miscreants with their faces covered arrived at the spot and suddenly pointed a gun at me. They asked me to drive my car at the gun point. They took me to different places and threatened to kill me before leaving me at Patia area in the wee hours. They took away three gold chains, one gold bracelet, one Apple Iphone and a Samsung Galaxy 9S plus mobile handset and Rs44,000 from me.”
Similarly, Sudhir Kumar Bout, another victim, was robbed of Rs25000 and valuables at Sum Hospital. The looters with revolvers took a selfie with Bout after the loot. Saurabh Das was forced to withdraw money from an ATM late Saturday night. They also ran away with a gold ring and a chain of Saurabh. They asked Saurabh to hold the pistol and took selfie with him.
Police have started investigations into these cases based on the complaints lodged by the victims. So many loots in a single day have raised questions on the weak night patrolling system in the city.
