Jeypore: The Jeypore police have arrested the main accused in the Rajanaghar firing case, Bikash Patra, from a village in West Bengal. The arrest was made by a special team led by second officer Siba Shankar Sahu 40 days after the incident.
The Jeypore firing had created tension in Jeypore town and was a subject of debate among political parties. Earlier, six persons were detained by Jeypore police and one more was expected to get detained.
Jeypore town IIC Baleswar Gidhi said Patra was remanded to two-day police custody to collect more information about the pistol he had used. Gidhi said the eighth accused will be arrested soon.
Sources said Santosh Nayak and his father were injured seriously in the firing. Santosh and his father were travelling on a motorcycle when five people intercepted them near Rajnagar in the afternoon. As soon as they stopped, the gang opened fire.
While one bullet hit Santosh on his back his father escaped. But the gang later hit Santosh’s father in the head with a stone and critically injured him.
The father and son were rushed to Jeypore hospital. Later, Santosh was shifted to Saheed Laxman Nayak (SLN) Medical College and Hospital, said Jeypore Town IIC Baleswar Gidhi and second officer Siba Shankar Sahu at a presser at the police station.
