Major mishap averted near Muniguda

Bhubaneswar: With a spate of derailments raising concern over railway safety, a gangman spotted a crack on the track near Muniguda station in Rayagada and showed red light to the approaching Visakhapatnam-Korba Express, saving lives of hundreds of passengers.
According to officials, the incident happened during the wee hours Tuesday near Muniguda station. Fortunately, the gangman spotted the crack minutes before the Visakhapatnam-Korba Express was scheduled to pass through the stretch.
The driver immediately responded to the gang man’s signal and stopped the train. The railway staff later reached the spot to carry out repairing work. Sources told Orissa POST that the train halted near Muniguda station for nearly three hours for the repair work.
According to officials, the loco pilot and assistant loco pilot of a goods train first detected the problem on the tracks. Although the goods train successfully crossed the broken track, the duo immediately informed the railway officials about the crack.
Significantly, the Railways has decided to felicitate three alert personnel who played a pivotal role in averting a major train mishap.
“Three railway personnel loco pilot, assistant pilot and gangman would be awarded for their presence of mind and alertness that averted a possible mishap,” said DRM, Sambalpur, Jaydip Gupta.
