Bhubaneswar: A 26-year-old woman was beaten to death with a frying pan by her husband over unknown reasons at Gada Sahi under Nayapalli police limits here Wednesday evening. The deceased was identified as Banasmita Swain.
Police detained her husband, Sarbeswar Pradhan, 31, for questioning. The exact motive behind the killing is yet to be ascertained. According to preliminary police inquiry, Sarbeswar has been taking medication for a mental health condition for the past eight years. He had married Banasmita around one-and-a-half years ago following a relationship, and the couple have a four-month-old daughter. Sarbeswar, a native of Rajnagar in Kendrapada district, was residing with his father, who is reportedly engaged in contractual work, which Sarbeswar helped oversee.
Family members said that the couple reportedly had no disputes, however, the reason for which Sarbeswar attacked Banasmita and beat her to death is yet to be ascertained. On being informed, Nayapal li police along with a scientific team reached the spot and initiated an investigation. “We received the call around 7- 8 pm. Preliminary investigation suggests that Sarbeswar hit Banasmita’s head with a frying pan. His family has also informed that he was under medication due to mental illness. The accused has been detained, and further probe into the matter is underway,” said Zone V ACP Biswaranjan Senapati.
