Man dies in elephant attack

Baripada: An elephant trampled an elderly man to death near Machua village under Morada block of Mayurbhanj district Tuesday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Gajendra Mahanta (75), a resident of the same village.

According to the villagers, he had gone to the forest Tuesday morning to attend nature’s call when an elephant attacked him.

The pachyderm trampled him to death on the spot.

On being informed, forest officials reached the spot and started investigation into this matter.

As many as 13 elephants have strayed into the area from Similipal. The presence of the jumbos for the last 15 days has left the residents panic-stricken.

Notably, another villager Pandav Sahu sustained grievous injuries following an elephant attack on him at Brahmanabil village under Chhendipada forest range of Angul district Sunday morning.

The incident took place after one of the elephants got separated from the herd. When the villagers made an attempt to drive it away, the angry elephant picked Pandav up on its trunk and tossed him to the ground causing serious injuries.
