Kendrapara: Annada Prasad Mallick (52) who helped people by donating blood 114 times now requires blood to save his life at Kadalabana village under Pattamundai block in Kendrapara district.
Being an anaemia patient, the number of red blood cells in his blood has decreased. While a normal person’s hemoglobin level is 12.7 gram/dl, his level of hemoglobin has dropped to 7 gram/dl. His family members said he lost excess blood because he had piles.
Recounting his first experience of blood donation, Annada said, “Then I was just 22 years old. I came to know that a unit of blood was required for a villager. At that time purchasing blood from outside was a costlier affair. I made up my mind that I would donate blood for my neighbour.
“At that time, I decided I would continue this noble job till the age of 70.”
He had since been donating blood at a gap of three months.
A few days ago, he went to the Pattamundai community health centre (CHC) to give blood to a patient. After the normal check-up, Dr Gadadhar Mallick warned him that he should not go for blood donation because of his low hemoglobin level.
He is now living a wretched life at his three-quartered house with his wife, two daughters and two sons.
Social activist Pratap Kumar Padhi said: “Annada has been awarded by various organisations for his noble cause of blood donation. He will be provided with required units of blood.”
