Kantapada: A man allegedly committed suicide after attempting to kill his wife suspecting her fidelity at Mankha village under Govindpur police limits in Cuttack district Wednesday morning.
While the deceased has been identified as Jagabandhu, a home guard, his critically injured wife was identified as Sumitra.
According to sources, Jagabandhu was working as a home guard at Govindpur police station. His first wife left him after he started to torture her suspecting her character. He then married Sumitra, but soon started suspecting her fidelity following which their relationship turned bitter.
When Sumitra was performing puja near a Tulsi plant in front of the house Wednesday morning, Jagabandhu allegedly picked up a crowbar and hit her on the head following which she became unconscious and fell down.
Jagabandhu then allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of the bedroom with a saree.
Neighbours, who spotted Sumitra lying on the ground and Jagabandhu’s body hanging from the ceiling, immediately informed the police.
Police reached the spot, rescued Sumitra in a critical condition and admitted her to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
After registering an unnatural death case, police seized Jagabandhu’s body and sent it for post-mortem.
Investigation into the incident is on, said a police official.
