Brahmapur: A court in Odisha’s Ganjam district Tuesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his 28-year-old wife by setting her on fire around four years ago, a government lawyer said.
Additional district judge Biswaranjan Behera pronounced the judgment on Suddam Hussein Khan, a resident of Budhaamba area, for killing his wife Sinima Bibi due to a family dispute and dowry demands in October 2022, around eight years after their marriage, Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Rashmi Rani Balabantaray said.
The woman died December 23, 2022 in Khurda hospital during treatment. The court, however, acquitted the convict’s mother and two sisters, who were implicated in the case, due to lack of evidence.
According to the prosecution, the couple frequently quarrelled after their marriage, while the deceased’s in-laws demanded dowry. The accused poured kerosene on her wife and set on fire October 11, 2022.
The woman, who sustained severe injuries, was shifted to a nearby hospital, from where she was referred to a private hospital and then to Khurda hospital, where she succumbed to burn injuries, it said.
After registering a case, Kabisurya Nagar police had arrested the convict along with the deceased’s mother-in-law and sisters-in-law.
