Brahmapur: A court in Odisha’s Ganjam district Monday sentenced a 58-year-old man to life imprisonment for killing his wife over a family dispute two years ago, a government advocate said.
Ganjam District and Sessions Court Judge Asant Kumar Das also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on convict Rajendra Jena.
Jena will undergo an additional year of rigorous imprisonment if he fails to pay the fine, public prosecutor Biswajit Baral said.
The court delivered the verdict after examining 13 witnesses, he said.
According to the prosecution, Jena killed his 56-year-old wife Jhunu Jena with a crowbar while she was sleeping at their house under the Brahmapur Sadar police station limits the night of August 28, 2024.
The couple used to quarrel frequently, and Jhunu’s brother lodged a complaint at the Sadar police station the next day, the prosecution said.
Police reached the spot and found the woman lying in a pool of blood, with the blood-stained weapon near her body.
The body was sent for post-mortem and Jena was arrested. He had remained in jail since his arrest after his bail plea was rejected by the court, the public prosecutor said.
