Jagatsinghpur, Dec 16: A local court handed down life imprisonment to a man for murdering a person over an illicit relationship.
The district and sessions judge Gopal Chandra Behera also imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 on convict Sukant Sethy of Paradip while pronouncing the order.
In default, the judge directed Sukant to serve an additional one year of imprisonment while disposing of the case. The judge delivered the order after examining the statements recorded by 10 witnesses, including the police chargesheet in the case.
According to the case diary, Sukant, during his stay in Paradip, came in contact with Pranati Sethy, wife of Bipin Sethy in Telugu slum in the area and developed a relationship with her. Later, the duo decided to get rid of Bipin as he was perceived as an obstacle in their relationship. The duo killed Bipin with a knife August 26, 2012 and fled. Police registered a case and arrested Sukant and Pranati over a complaint filed by Bipin’s brother-in-law Rabindra Sethy in Paradip police station. Police had also seized the murder weapon and sent it for forensic examination.
While Sukant was sentenced to life imprisonment, Pranati’s case is still pending for hearing in the additional district judge court.
Public prosecutor Raj Kishore Khatua pleaded the matter on behalf of the state government.
