Puri, March 12: Additional sessions judge (first class) Bimala Prasad Chand Thursday awarded life imprisonment to a person after convicting him for his wife’s murder.
The judge also imposed Rs 10,000 as penalty on convict Rohit Bhand of Bajrakot under Krushnaprasad police limits. Bhand will serve six months’ additional jail time if he fails to pay the penalty, the judge said.
Bhand was married to Sukanti, daughter of Jalandhar Das of Rambha in Ganjam, in 2002. Sukanti was brutally tortured by Bhand ever since, her father said in a police complaint. Bhand got married a second time in 2004 and hatched a conspiracy to kill Sukanti. Bhand, his second wife and her brother took Sukanti to a farm March 7, 2009 where she was killed. Police registered a murder case acting on a complaint lodged by the victim’s father.
The judge convicted Bhand after taking into account statements of 14 witnesses and investigation reports. The judge acquitted Bhand’s second wife and her brother on grounds of insufficient evidence against them.
