Redhakhol, Dec 7: In a gruesome incident, a man hacked his wife and her friend to death reportedly over dowry at Kharsali under Redhakhol police limits in Sambalpur district late Sunday night, police said Monday.
Police arrested accused Alekh Sandh (30) of Kukudabahali village and seized the bodies of his wife Mamita Sandh (25) and her friend Dukhi Munda (35), a tribal woman, from a pool of blood.
Alekh has confessed before the police that he killed his wife for dowry and her friend for inciting Mamita against him, said sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Rabindra Kumar Mallick.
An axe used in the killing was seized from the accused. Police sent the bodies for post-mortem and registered a case. The accused will be produced in a court Tuesday, Redhakhol police station IIC Jogesh Panda said.
Police said Mamita, daughter of Karuna Behera of Kharsali, married Alekh of Kukudabahali in 2014. During the marriage, her father had given various items as dowry. Mamita’s days passed off well for a few months but her ordeal began when Alekh pestered her to bring more money as dowry and started inflicting torture on her.
A week ago, she came back to her parent’s house after Alekh started assaulting her physically for dowry.
The incident took place when Mamita and Dukhi were asleep after dinner Sunday. An infuriated Alekh reached his in-laws’ village in the night. He sneaked into the room where his wife was asleep and hacked her to death before eliminating Dukhi.
Mamita’s father noticed Alekh fleeing and alerted the family members. Her brother Lochan Sandh lodged a complaint in the local police station in this regard. PNN
