Berhampur: Police Wednesday arrested a man on the charge of raping a 20-year-old girl at Mali Jagannathpur village under Ganjam block. He was identified as Sudarshan Mahapatra (52) of the same village.
The girl was sent for a medical examination to MKCG Medical College and Hospital and later handed over to her family. “The accused will be produced in court Thursday,” second officer Hrusikesh Panda said. According to police, the girl belonged to a poor family and used to tend cattle for a living.
On the fateful day, Mahapatra gagged the girl in a forest and forced himself upon her. He threatened her with dire consequences if she revealed the incident to anyone.
Since then, he has raped the girl on several occasions. The matter came to fore after the girl became pregnant.
