Man jumps off 5th floor of hosp, kin cry foul play

Bhubaneswar: A 26-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the fifth floor of a private hospital in Infocity police limits here Friday night.
The deceased has been identified as Suresh Kandi, a resident of Betanda in Dharmasala police limits of Jajpur. Suresh was admitted to the city-based private medical college August 1 after he
took poison reportedly following a family dispute.
His family members rushed him to a health centre at Dharmasala and later to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. However, he was shifted to the private hospital here when his condition deteriorated, sources said.
info“Though he was recuperating fast, a frustrated Suresh jumped off the fifth floor of the intensive care unit (ICU) around 1am,” hospital sources said.
Meanwhile, the victim’s family members claimed it was a murder. “When I saw him for the last time, his hands and legs were tied with the bed in an attempt to avoid reoccurrence of suicide bid. We had been preparing for his discharge. But to our shock, the hospital authorities told us he jumped off the building,” Suresh’s sister Puspalata said in a chocking voice, adding he was killed and thrown off the building.
When asked, Infocity IIC Banita Moharana said, “Prima facie, it seems like a suicide. The youth might have had jumped off the high-rise after breaking the windowpane,” Moharana said. “A case (28/17) of unnatural death has been registered and the body sent to Capital Hospital for autopsy. The exact cause of death would be ascertained after the post-mortem report comes,” Moharana added. Suresh’s father Sridhar Kandi has lodged a complaint with the Infocity police alleging murder of his son.
Sources said it is the second incident in the year as a patient had jumped off the same floor of the hospital after breaking open the bathroom windowpane earlier this year.
Intellectuals, however, attributed the recurrence of such incidents to the callous hospital authorities and lack of security arrangements there.
“A dedicated nurse was engaged to take care of the patient. It is surprising how Suresh broke the windowpane and jumped off the building. The entire episode occurred in the presence of the nurse and other patients, but none of them came to his rescue,” they said.
