Khurda: Town police arrested a man in Surat in Gujarat on charges of murdering his wife. Police brought the man who was absconding to the city Sunday.
The accused, Ansuman Pradhan alias Manas (27), is a resident of Barapada village under Sadar police limits. An illicit affair the accused had with a girl and a demand for dowry are said to be the reasons behind the murder, according to sources.
Manas, who used to work as a collection agent of Annapurna Micro Finance at Talcher, had married Mamina (24), daughter of Bijay Jena of Taraboi village in Jatni police limits, in 2011, according to sources. Later, the couple moved to a rented accommodation at Bhaliabadi village in Town police limits.
The accused had developed an affair with a girl who worked as a collection agent of the company’s Berhampur branch, said sources. He had also been torturing Mamina over dowry, they said.
Manas murdered his wife to marry the girl, according to sources. A heated argument ensued between Manas and his wife February 7 night and in a fit of rage he killed Mamina. The accused then dumped the body in Sialia forest along the Kolkata-Chennai National Highway 16 and fled. The incident came to light after people of the area spotted the body the following morning and informed police.
Police soon launched a probe and found circumstantial evidence of the murder. Later, Mamina’s father identified her body. Jena lodged a complaint of murder against Manas on the basis of which police registered a case.
Police formed a special team and raided various places in Angul, Talcher and Badamba area, but failed to arrest Manas who was on the run.
Later, acting on information about Manas’ presence in Surat, a police team reached the state and arrested the accused.
Manas has confessed to the crime. He was produced in court and was sent to jail after his bail petition was rejected. Earlier, Manas’s father was arrested in connection with the murder, said investigating officer Gangadhar Sethi.
